Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the USNS Harvey Milk be renamed during Pride Month, sidelining a decorated Korean War Navy veteran and LGBTQ+ icon. Milk served as a diving officer aboard USS Chanticleer and USS Kittiwake before his tragic assassination in 1978 as one of the first openly gay elected officials. This renaming trend extends to at least seven other John Lewis–class ships named for civil-rights leaders.
